What's in a name?

Shakespeare has aptly said, “What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. And we all use the dialogue whenever we don’t recollect someone’s name. The truth however is that name means a lot to us and serves as an integral part of our life. I am not going into numerology and stuff but I’m sure every one would prefer to be named rather than being called specimen no. X.

Name is the the first thing you get to own when you step into this world. Parents go through a thorough selection of names to find a one that they feel is the best for their child. It’s the only thing we wish to leave behind when we pass away.

It’s not just a means of identification but much more than that. It symbolizes parent’s hope, your ambitions and furnishes a sense of belonging thereby boosting your self esteem. Parents dream that their child ‘bada naam karega’ which literally means make a big name for themselves. Success is associated with the name not in the astrological sense but more like a badge of fame.

We normally associate ourselves with name rather than our physical or intellectual self. If someone remembers your name, you are sure that person recollects you though in reality the person might not even remember any other thing about you.

You might argue, if name is that important, then why do people change their names? That people need to change names goes to prove my point further. Why would anyone bother changing names if it is just a means to identify? They want a name which they could associate with themselves, their alter ego.

The traditional customs require the girl to change her name after marriage. It’s because they expect the girl to identify with her husband after marriage rather than her parents. It’s not enough that she leaves her parent’s home, she needs to sacrifice her whole identity.

So next time, try to remember people’s names instead of thinking’ what’s in a name’. It creates a better impression and they feel you value them.

What do you think of your name? How do you associate yourself with it? I'd love to hear from you?

  2. Couldn't have agreeded more with you. While speaking to customer care chaps, I always pick-up their name and adress them with their name in every sentence I speak. And those faceless chaps suddenly turn extra helpful to me.

  3. Name is indeed very important. I like my name. My only problem is very few can pronounce it. I feel, my surname which was added after marriage gives some weight to my short name :)
