Pursuit of Happiness-1

I have always wondered about happiness. It seems like happiness comes in life in moments and remains elusive as ever. However, everyone goes on an eternal pusuit of happiness. In Manache Sloka, Saint Ramdas says ‘ Jagi sarva sukhi asa kon ahe, vichare mana tuchi shoduna pahe’ (Who is the happiest man on this earth? Try if you can find him) indicating that such a person doesn’t exist.

All religions promise to deliver an eternal happiness. Maybe, it’s this promise which attracts man towards religion. Each one of us wants to be happy. We want to hold on to the moments which make us happy and stretch them forever.

Pursuit of happiness

The story of a Pursuit

Once upon a time, there was a fool named Mohan. Mohan had a locket which he considered lucky. As he believed in carrying his luck with him, he wore the locket everywhere. One day his chain broke and his locket fell down. Mohan was frantic, he started a search for his locket.

After some time, his friend Nandan saw him crawling near the trees and asked him about it. When Mohan explained, Nandan asked him to remember the exact spot he was standing when the chain broke.

Mohan told him and his friend exclaimed, “Then, why are you looking here? The locket must be two blocks away.”

“It’s dark there. I’m afraid of the dark. It’s easier to find things in the light. Things look so clear.”

Finding happiness

Sometimes, we are just like Mohan. We like an easy and less scary way. Most of the times we seek happiness in the material things. Hence, our happiness is limited to those perishable moments. Real happiness is in our inner self. It is hidden deep within the darkest corners of our soul. We are scared to search for it in its right place because we are afraid that we won’t find it or rather we aren’t sure what we might find there.

It’s easy to find things in the light but darkness daunts us. All we can do is touch random objects or bump into them to get idea of directions in the dark. There’s another easier way, lighting the dark place. We need to light our inner self to find the happiness lying there. Happiness doesn’t have to come in life in small bursts. It could be a continuum if you dare to look for it within yourself.

What does happiness mean to you? I'd love to know your views.

  1. Don't know how to define happiness but yes, it lies in the small-small things. And it is a constant effort. Sadly, we look for happiness in wrong places, just like Mohan.

  3. Nice post. Happiness, I think is a state of mind. Sometimes we are happy just like that. At other times, we are not happy even when we are sorrounded by a lot of things.
